How counselling works online

If you have never had counselling before, here is what usually happens. There is nothing to sign up for just to look.

  1. Have a read

Start with what is on your mind, or look through everyone. Each profile says what the counsellor helps with, how they work and which professional body they belong to.

  2. Answer a few questions

When someone feels like a good fit, the online service asks a few short questions about you and what you would like help with.

  3. Meet by video, phone or messages

Sessions happen online, so you can talk from your sofa, your car or a quiet room at work. You are not limited to people who live near you.

  4. Go at your own pace

If the first person does not feel right, it is fine to look again. Many people try one or two before it clicks.

Ways counsellors work

Every approach

Some counsellors follow one approach; most blend a few. If a name means nothing to you, that is fine. You do not need to choose one to get started.

Professional bodies

In the UK, counsellors are usually members of, or registered with, a professional body. Each profile shows the body the counsellor lists.

British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the largest professional body for counsellors in the UK.
National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS)
The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society, a professional body for counsellors and psychotherapists.
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
The Health and Care Professions Council, which keeps the register for practitioner psychologists and other protected titles.

This guide copies what each counsellor's profile states and does not check anyone's membership. The body itself is the place to confirm a number.
